I often consider the conundrum about of making things in a world full of too many things. I have come to the conclusion that for me, the only things left to make are those that are truly exquisite for some reason or another, are solutions, are beautiful, thought provoking, or comforting in some essential way. There is a great desire and a great need in each of us and we all yearn to fill our material lives with possessions that help us live better or more richly in some way.
I choose to work primarily with wood because it is an endlessly renewable resource and our relationship with it as earth-dwellers is deep and long.
There are increasing challenges as to how we learn to live in harmony on a breathing planet so we must find new ways of co-evolving with the trees to create the built environment. I suspect, as do many others, that it is the magnificent forest that has all the clues we need to learn to live more gracefully together now, and my studio practice is an effort to listen more closely to its sound.
